& the real kicker is, people still use the "macs are too expensive" argument to not get one... cuz, I dunno, apparently their time & mental energy/sanity is worth nothing o_O

The main problem with our healthcare system is that we pay assloads of money for subpar service. Even if you *can* afford it, you're no better than paying the taxes you pay in Canada (or Sweden, or any of the dozens of other countries with socialized medical). So why not pay a little more in taxes for a lower overall cost for the same amount of service?

And really, all you're doing when paying health insurance is subsidizing unhealthy people's costs anyway, until the day comes that you break your arm or get pneumonia and need a short (and expensive, in this country) hospital visit. There's a growing segment of twentysomthings in this country that just assume that being healthy will eliminate your need for insurance, but it's just not true.

Really, I think there's two things that need to happen:

1. Lowering the cost of healthcare, both in actual service and from pharmaceutical companies.

2. Government-administration of healthcare. The system does work, as other countries have shown us. There's no reason that poor people should be denied healthcare just because they're poor, and that's the primary reason for it. A lot of countries that have social medicine are taking steps to ease the monetary burden from relatively unhealthy people, like anti-smoking campaigns and advocating healthy lifestyles.

While we may get upset that people do dumb things, we're already paying for that, and a lot more than we would be with social healthcare.

Sorry that got a little ranty. I *am* very jealous of your Mac. :-)

I really enjoyed shopping with you! Here are some song lyrics to make you feel better
"You look tired
Would it help to hear me say
Don’t you worry
Friday’s not that far away?

On the weekends
We try to get our share
Of excitement and of fresh air
Trying to forget
Who we’re gonna be
When the alarm rings
On monday morning"

Because you know this weekend is going to be fun with magic and scorch-con.
